Genius hour

Whitebaiting Season 15th August to 30th November

What is the problem?

The golf club wants new cups and pins but they don’t have enough money for it.

What are we trying to improve, create or change?

We will catch whitebait and fundraise it for the golf club-rugby club

We can make money by selling the whitebait and doing the hard yards.

We will go out the river every friday for 20% genius time we can sell that whitebait that we catch and sell

  • Permission form

  • Day/time

  • Plan:

  • First off we will wake up at about 6:30am then gaffer our nets together and put them on the back of theos dads ute.

  • When we arrive at the river we’ll set up our nets and weigh the tide to come in.  We’ll come back about 3 if the whitebaits are running.

  • The best time is around 9:00-10:00 ish so leave school around then

  • We will sell the whitebait for $30-$40 a pound

  • Rules on selling:

The processing and sale of whitebait is covered by the Food Act 2014. Under the Act, people who process food must ensure their food is safe for human consumption. If you process whitebait, this means you need to have hygienic practices for processing and handling.Laws

  1. Riley and Theo this is a clear plan. What times do the whitebait run best? Is it related to the tide as they enter the rivermouth? I am keen to see what you find out regarding any laws or guidelines about selling whitebait.

    1. For Friday I need to see that you have:
      - found out how any rules regarding selling whitebait apply to you and your plan to meet these
      - that you have written an email you can send to both the golf club and rugby club to outline your plan to fundraise for them and request permission to use their name as part of your selling plan
      - that you know any limits or rules around how you catch whitebait
      - etiquette for whitebaiters
      - that you have written your permission form outlining your plan for whitebaiting and how you will be safe, the times you will be out of school and any gear you need to take etc
      - place the content of your emails on your blog to show your process

Today you will need to write to DOC to find out if what you are planning to do is legal and also contact IRD to find out if there are any rules you need to be aware of.
